Businesses left sweltering, paying big for copper thefts
On the roof of a strip mall near Hollenbeck Street and the 10 Freeway, burglars stripped six air conditioners of their copper coils in recent weeks. Then they returned to pull apart three more. Although the thieves may have made about $900 for two nights' work, businesses like World Gym, Dental Fun Zone and several others were left sweltering - and facing an estimated $100,000 in damage, said one expert called in by police. "We have a rash of copper thefts - and not just in our city," said Cpl. Rudy Lopez. Thefts of copper, aluminum and other metals have increased in recent years as their value has soared, but their worth to the burglars is far less than the damage done to the victims, authorities said. The nighttime game lights are dead at Little League fields in Montclair and Hacienda Heights because of copper stolen in the past two weeks.
Wheat board latest topic as federal NDP, Liberals snipe over possible ...
But the spirit of unity quickly dissolved as NDP MP Pat Martin urged his Liberal counterparts not to "sit on their hands" when the wheat board issue comes up for a vote in the Commons. Liberal MP Raymond Simard, who was sitting just a few feet away, called Martin's comments a political cheap shot. Simard could not say whether the Liberals would abstain from a vote on the wheat board if it is deemed a confidence motion that could result in an election. On Wednesday, New Democrat finance critic Thomas Mulcair said Liberal Leader Stephane Dion has shown "incredible weakness" by indicating his party might abstain from a vote on the federal budget. .
Cuban legislature to name Fidel Castro successor
The younger Castro has provisionally held power since his brother fell ill in July 2006 and the stage is set for him to be formally confirmed as head of state. Raul Castro, at 76 the world's longest serving defence minister, is the obvious pick for a government that feels threatened by the Bush administration at the vulnerable moment of losing the charismatic leadership of its founder Fidel Castro, debilitated by illness, after 49 years at the helm. "National defence and internal stability are the watchwords right now," a member of the ruling Communist Party said, requesting anonymity. "More than anything, Raul signifies stability and continuity at a time of great anxiety and uncertainty," said Frank Mora, an expert on Cuba at the National War College in Washington.
Murders, misdemeanor battery cases fill dockets at courthouse
In addition to the felony murder charges, Hall also faces 17 other counts, including attempted murder, driving under the influence, unlawfully taking a vehicle, evading and assaulting a peace officer and assault with a deadly weapon by means likely to produce great bodily injury. At the time of the crashes, records show Hall was on probation for battery on a sheriff's deputy. Hall faces a possible sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole if convicted. At the Antelope Valley juvenile courthouse, one family will be protesting bright and early, hoping to get their message across to the courts that teens who commit murder should be tried as adults. A fitness hearing is scheduled today to determine whether two minors are fit to be tried as adults for the murder of a 22-year-old Palmdale man.
