DDA proposes Marquette-Ojibwa project

STOREY

ST. IGNACE - A National Historic Landmark, the unpretentious former mission church that now houses the Museum of Ojibwa Culture stands in dire need of several structural and mechanical repairs that total $155,000 to $210,000, according to the St. Ignace Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

Once known as the Fr. Marquette Mission, the old wooden-frame church facing out on N. State Street was reportedly built in 1837. It was moved to its current site in 1954, a small park memorializing St. Ignace's famed missionary explorer and is now operated by the DDA.

The building's focus has also changed over recent years from a period-piece missionary church building and public park to a museum highlighting the site's history of native occupation by members the Ojibwa culture.

Earned income credit aids low-wage workers - if they take it

Lucy Crane, project director for the EITC regional initiative at the United Way of Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky, said roughly 15 percent to 20 percent of eligible local households don't file and claim the tax credit - leaving an estimated $20 million on the table.

"We find a lot of people that don't claim the credit aren't filing taxes period - people think they didn't make much last year, so they won't owe taxes," she said, adding that the irony is they don't realize they are eligible to get money.

Of the 4,500 free tax returns processed by the coalition of community groups in the region, the earned income credit provided the biggest boost. The tax credit delivered almost $2.1 million to those 4,500 households - roughly 39 percent of the $5.4 million in total refunds garnered by those households.

Police grab tagger with an eye for utility poles

A prolific 31-year-old tagger was arrested Thursday, Jan. 31, and hit with nearly three dozen criminal mischief charges in connection with graffiti nailed to utility poles across the city.

Ryan Wendell Birkland was arrested by officers from Portland Police Bureau's Central Precinct Neighborhood Response Team.

The graffiti began showing up on Portland General Electric poles several months ago. A similar style of graffiti resulted in $12,000 worth of damages to the Sherwood Field Water Tank in Washington Park.

During the investigation, Officer Matt Miller, the bureau's graffiti investigator, received several tips about the graffiti that lead officers to Gallery 19, 1339 N.W. 19th Ave. Similar graffiti could be seen through the gallery's windows on display inside the building.

Not so much.

7:18: Kurt Lowder still works for MTV? Didn't he like found that channel or something?

7:24: Marilyn Monroe , Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera arrived! I love watching the girls try to get out of the superhigh SUVs in their tight dresses. Better them than me.

7:29: Jennifer Lopez looks like a mummy -- wrapped head to toe. Truth be told, she is so glam. I could never pull most of that off.
