I continue to be amazed at the evolvement of Huckleberries Online and the local blog community. HBO Blogfest '08 is another example of something happenin' different here. A wonderful mix of personalities and pseudonyms. It didn't start out that way. But I'm delighted that we've gotten to a place where we can set aside ideologies, religious doctrine, politics, disparate backgrounds, etc., to enjoy one another's company. Blogfest '08 was a special time. I'd like to see HBO and the SR sponsor a Dougfest (Doug Clark & Trailer Park Girls) this summer. It might happen. Who knows? HBO works because there's no agenda or much organization. Sorta like the Grateful Dead. If I don't screw things up at HBO Central, we'll get together for another blogfest about this time next year. Now, for your Wild Card ...
In Highlander, function, not flash
The redesigned Toyota Highlander needs to transport and entertain youngsters, swallow cargo, and conquer snow. It needs to be safe, comfortable, and luxurious, and it needs to do all these things without breaking the bank - in car payments or at the pump. A tall order, but the leading midsize SUV competitors really have gotten that good. The Highlander makes the grade on all counts, though it doesn't excel in any one area. Provided it can maintain its outstanding resale value and reliability, it should prove a smart - if not particularly captivating - choice for years to come. Base, Sport, and Limited trim levels come with front- or four-wheel drive. Toyota's California design studios sculpted the exterior, which is bigger in all major dimensions than the old Highlander.

Pipe producers win a victory over imports
It's not the final round of the fight, but American pipe producers racked up big points on Tuesday when the U.S. Department of Commerce ruled that Chinese pipe producers unfairly subsidized their products. Pipe producers win a victory over imports China subsidizes pipe, ITC rules By Michael Roknick Herald Business Editor SHENANGO VALLEY — It's not the final round of the fight, but American pipe producers racked up big points on Tuesday when the U.S. Department of Commerce ruled that Chinese pipe producers unfairly subsidized their products. In its preliminary finding, the ITC said Wheatland Tube Co., Sharon Tube Co. and four other American pipe producers were the victims of improper Chinese subsidies on circular welded steel pipe exports to the U.S. The companies, along with the United Steelworkers, had filed a trade suit with the Commerce Department in June and also a dumping suit with the U.S.
Chain saw artist makes wooden wonders in Berks Co.
WERNERSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Amid clouds of dust and flying chips, Dean Fox, with a buzzing chain saw in hand, circled, turned and stalked what seemed to be his prey just as if he were about to wrestle an alligator.Instead, Fox was creating one — a wooden sculpture of the fearsome looking reptile made out of a cedar log. Fox worked diligently and continuously, seemingly in a trance, at the heavily wooded grounds of the former historic site of the Galen Hall Hotel on South Mountain, South Heidelberg Township."We're going to put the alligator by the pond," said Tom Masano Sr., 90, longtime Berks County car dealer, eyeing Fox's craftsmanship and seemingly in an artistic trance of his own.Apparently, the South Mountain woodlands are perfect for such trances. They inspire the enchanted visions of carved wood nymphs, hawks, eagles, herons, raccoons, ruffed grouse and a meditating woman situated on a rock in front of a 95-by-65-foot pond, 2 to 10 1/2 feet deep in spots, filled with fish and fed by four cold-water springs. It is a place to dream big, as big as a giant family of cedar people, carved from dead trees in a 50-acre cedar forest, where a sculptured man stands 22 feet tall, his wife 18 feet, their son 12 feet and the family dog about 5 feet. And it is also a place where imaginary kings can reign on an ornate, wooden throne, carved from the stump of an old, diseased poplar tree."Well, this is my hobby ...
