| New Nike Sneaker Targets Jocks, Greens, Wall Street
The target audience for the latest edition of Nike Inc.'s landmark Air Jordan shoe is probably more concerned with its sleek styling than its carbon footprint. So when the Air Jordan XX3 is unveiled at the NBA All-Star Game festivities this weekend, sneakerheads probably won't pay much attention to what really distinguishes the shoe from its predecessors: the near absence of chemical-based glues and an outsole made of recycled material. The Beaverton, Ore., company's new sneaker is neither the first nor the only shoe in the industry to be touted as "green." For Nike, though, the Air Jordan XX3 is at the forefront of a broader effort that is intended to please not just environmentalists and jocks but also Wall Street. It represents a systemic shake-up of the company that is supposed to result in manufacturing operations that are both carbon neutral and cheaper.
Personal Finance 101 with H. Swint Friday
We are entering the last weekend before Christmas and I am sure everyone is scrambling to get all of their last-minute shopping and holiday preparations ready. A shopper interviewed by a local TV news crew last week had some obvious but good advice that this is not a time to be stressed, but to enjoy. Easy to say. As adults, many of us have a number of stressful responsibilities on our shoulders at this time of year. One of if not the largest is the financial burden created by the customary holiday celebrations. The other stresses include the time and effort required to make sure the holidays are fun for everyone we care about. The magnitude of these stresses is readily observable as we see suicide rates rise dramatically this time of the year. The best advice I can give is to do the best you can and realize that your financial and personal health and sanity depend on not trying to do, expect or demand too much from the holidays.
How a 5-foot waterboy at Texas became a football icon
The powder blue '95 Oldsmobile heads down Guadalupe Street, slightly above the speed limit, air conditioner full blast. The driver, 78-year-old William E. " Rooster " Andrews , has been animatedly telling stories for nearly four hours, first in his Rooster Andrews Sporting Goods office, then during lunch at Trudy's Café. But now, during a late-afternoon errand, his distinct and, yes, rooster -like, scratchy voice takes on a reflective tone. .
Parish hopes to reopen improved office annex
ST. FRANCISVILLE — West Feliciana Parish Police Jury officials said Thursday they hope improvements made in recent weeks would allow them to reopen the parish’s courthouse annex Monday. Jury President Bert Babers and Parish Manager Ambrose Sims said the jury will monitor the air quality in the building through the weekend and again Monday morning. "All things being equal, we hope we can reopen Monday," Babers said after meeting with a consulting engineer the jury hired last month when workers in the building began complaining of illnesses. Investigations into possible causes for the illnesses showed a buildup of carbon dioxide in the building, as well as dirty ductwork in part of the building’s heating and air conditioning systems. A year ago, dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide made workers ill and forced the jury to close the building until the jury sealed an exterior opening in its boiler room wall near the boilers’ exhausts.
Travels with Lonely Planet: Oklahoma City
Two old-timer (and long closed) Art Deco hotels reopened in the last year, and already their lounges buzz with after-work drinkers. Others hoof it a few blocks west to the recently relocated, Art Deco inspired Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Footsteps fall below the streets too. Connecting many buildings is an other-worldly 3,000-foot network of commuter tunnels built in the 1970s. Previously glum and uninspired, a recent $1.6 million project has rechristened it as ''the Underground,'' with artful, glowing hallways (and a Chinese restaurant) lit by gold, mauve and sky-blue bulb displays. One hallway leads north a few blocks to the sobering Oklahoma City Memorial, the site of the 1995 bombing. The touching site features two walls marked with the time of the blast and 168 bronze chairs -- one for each victim -- facing a reflecting pool.

The Journal commented that, "This research may result in a paradigm shift in the treatment of asthma. This research demonstrates the importance that duration of therapy has on clinical and physiologic responses." "It is gratifying to see these findings, which were originally described in Prof. Bond's laboratory, confirmed in a respected independent laboratory," commented William J. Garner, MD, Chairman of Inverseon. http://www.inverseon.com/ .
