| It Is What It Is … But What Is It?
They only run a handful of plays (albeit out of multiple formations), the most successful keying off wideout Randy Moss running deep. Tom Brady either hurls a long one to Moss, counting on him to go get it despite multiple defenders, or goes to a receiver running to the soft spot in the coverage left in Moss' wake. When the opposition blitzes to prevent the deeper routes from unfolding in time, Brady hits a hot receiver, like Wes Welker, coming out of the slot. When the defense sits back to prevent longer plays, the Pats run it or dump short screen passes to one of their elusive backs. The Patriots' fantastic, and somehow still underrated, offensive line is often in maximum protection mode, augmented by a tight end or two. They are agile enough to flip between power run blocking and max protection with a single word or signal from Brady, and do their jobs cohesively.
Radio & TV Talk
R&B hottie Mario, magician Penn Jillette, Olympic gold medal winner skater Kristi Yamaguchi (an immediate favorite, right), tennis star Monica Seles and "Police Academy' star Steve Guttenberg. The others include Tony winning actress Marissa Jaret Winokur. Radio personality Adam Carolla should provide comic relief. "American Pie" actress Shannon Elizabeth should provide eye candy. Latino actor Christian de la Fuente is also eye candy and Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor. The show premieres March 17. No, we’re not related
But instead of one of my usual, meandering deals about life on the road in the NBA, I'm going to yap basketball for the umpteenth day in a row (sooner or later we're going to stray off topic, for real). So, I had a funny phone exchange after practice yesterday. "You and Dale Davis must be cousins after what you wrote [Monday]," the cat on the other end of the phone said to me, he was joking, of course. I had to laugh myself. No, we're not related. But Dale is one of my favorite dudes out there, active or not. And more importantly, he represents the type of player this Hawks team so desperately needs to complete what started over the weekend with the Mike Bibby trade. After watching these guys practice for the first time it became painfully obvious to me that Josh Smith, Al Horford, Zaza Pachulia and Solomon Jones comprise the entire frontcourt rotation the Hawks will use for the final 33 games of this season - starting with tonight's game against the Lakers - and possibly beyond.
Officer Barely Dodges Pole through Car Window Tragedy
A chase ended with a pole smashed right through the windshield of a Edgewood ISD patrol car. The school district police officer was after two men who stole an air-conditioning unit. The Edgwood ISD officer saw the two people stealing the air conditioner. She chased after them into the street, where the two men separated and one ran right in front of her police car. She then swerved to avoid the suspect and instead smashed into a chain link fence. A post from the fence crashed through the windshield. Luckily no one was in the passenger seat of the patrol car, because the fence post went completely through the windshield and into the passenger seat of the police car. The two thieves got away with the air conditioning unit they stole from the abandoned Edgewood Elementary School.
