Deal signed for Perkins plant

After four months of deliberation, Delphi Corp. has chosen a potential buyer.

Delphi Corp. entered into a $44.2 million asset sale and purchase agreement Wednesday with Cleveland-based Resilience Capital Partners for the sale of its wheel bearings business.

There are a few more hurdles to clear before closing the sale with Resilience Capital Partners.

Delphi Corp. filed a motion at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York to request a bidding procedures hearing on Jan. 25. The bidding procedures hearing will allow other businesses interested in acquiring the plant a chance to outbid Resilience Capital Partners. If no other company bids on the property, a final sale hearing will be set sometime in the first quarter.

Sure sign of spring: Time to prep your RV

When it's February, most recreational vehicles in our area are tucked in for winter. But for those owners who are still active with their RVs, and those who will soon "wake up" their vehicles for spring break, here are a few tips.

RV Activation

• Check the water system for leaks, sanitize the system and make sure the toilet is operating.

• Remove tape and protective coverings from all vents; open everything to see if rodents or insects got in or if you have any leaks.

• Clean and inspect the roof carefully to avoid punctures or damaging any seals; check body and window seals.

• Inspect awning fabrics and, if you clean them, make sure they're dry before rolling them back up.

• Inspect RV and tow-vehicle tires for cracks, uneven wear and foreign objects and inflate tires to cold weather pressures.

ComEd plans to push efforts that cut bills

ComEd customers may pay more for new conservation programs but could save in the long run, consumer advocates and the utility said Thursday.

The Illinois Commerce Commission, which regulates ComEd, has approved energy efficiency programs proposed by ComEd, downstate utilities and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Different programs will roll out at different times. They include discounts on energy efficient light bulbs; the pick up and recycling of older, inefficient refrigerators; air conditioning "tune ups" and other measures designed to reduce energy consumption.

ComEd said consumers overall could save roughly $155 million during the lifetime of the programs, possibly up to 10 years. That could save 1.2 megawatts of power, or enough to power 140,000 homes for one year, ComEd spokesman John Dewey said.

New technology can seal ductwork with aerosol

This being the Christmas season, I am going to write about a part of the government that works to make life better and actually saves you money.

This part of the government produced Aeroseal, a technology that cuts residential and commercial heating and cooling bills by about 30 percent. In doing so, it saves a vast amount of energy and could dramatically cut down on greenhouse gases.

The technology was developed by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Many of the lab's research activities are fairly arcane, but have practical applications that are licensed to corporations. Recently, they licensed a gene therapy for Parkinson's disease; ion mobility analysis technology for cardiovascular disease indicators; and technology for the cost-effective removal of mercury from coal-fired power plant emissions.
