Catalytic converters targeted by North County thieves

The loss is just one in a recent rash in thefts of the costly anti-smog devices that police say are sold to scrap metal recyclers for cash. The rash of thefts began in early January, and since then, more than a dozen catalytic converters have been stolen from vehicles in North County, police said. All of the thefts target late-model Toyota trucks and sport utility vehicles, they said."They pick those because they sit higher off the ground," making it easier for thieves to crawl underneath and remove the converter, which is attached inside the exhaust pipe, Escondido police Lt. Bob Benton said. The converters are stolen for the small amounts of precious metals they contain, including platinum, rhodium and palladium, and can fetch up to $100 at scrap metal yards, authorities said. The thefts do not cause serious damage to the vehicles, but can cost victims up to $3,500 in repairs, said Jennifer Baray, assistant service manager at Toyota of Escondido.Like pilfered copper pipes and wiring, police began seeing catalytic converter thefts when the price of the metals increased, authorities said."There's always some hot valuable that's being stolen because of its scrap value," said Fiona Everett, crime analyst for the Carlsbad Police Department.Frank Scafidi, spokesman for the National Insurance Crime Bureau, said there are no hard statistics on the frequency of the crime, which has grown into a nationwide problem."We started getting reports of these things early last year.

Only GritsforBreakfast noted the posting, pointing to a Dallas Morning News editorial criticizing the agency's diversion of funds for correctional officers to office renovation.

On Sunday, however, Austin civil rights watchdog Jim Harrington took issue with the job posting — noting that applications are only being taken for five business days and alleging that the commission had "buried" the posting on its site.

The job posting is not prominently displayed on the TYC site. You have to search the jobs alphabetically to find it. And the window from job posting to closing is, clearly, small. The job pays up to $160,000 per year and suggests applicants have the "ability to maintain high tolerance to mental stress."

The seemingly endless sunshine that illuminated Tracy this week seems the perfect initiation for a new home solar system. At least, Bryan and Stacey Watson sure think so.The couple beat out 15,000 contestants to win a free home solar system through BP Solar and "Evan Almighty," a Universal Pictures movie that was filmed using energy from solar panels. The Watsons, with their 1-year-old son, Chance, basked in their win Thursday while a team from 1st Light Energy Inc. installed 25 solar panels on top of their home, which sits just north of Schulte Road. The system comes with a wireless module that shows how many kilowatts the panels have converted into energy and how much energy the family's used on any given day.The Watson's utility bills typically range from $150 in the winter to $250 during the heat of summer.

Fayette County man drops out of 9th District race

A Fayette County Democrat who said he was upset with U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster's voting record has decided not to challenge him for the 9th District seat and instead is endorsing the incumbent.Robert "Ted" Pritchard, 56, Fairchance, said Tuesday that he has to withdraw from the race because of health and personal issues. He said he spoke with Shuster and will be supporting him, not his would-be Democratic primary challenger, Tony Barr, of Blair County.
When he announced his candidacy at the end on January, Pritchard said he was upset that the 47-year-old Republican congressmen voted against the Clean Air Act and a minimum wage increase. He also said Shuster should have introduced legislation to combat the energy crisis. After speaking with the lawmaker, Pritchard said he changed his mind."Personally (Shuster and I) see eye to eye on things," he said.
