Direct-vent fireplaces draw air and exhaust fumes outdoors

Q: I plan to install a gas fireplace myself for additional heat in a large family room. I want an efficient one, but one that also has realistic flames. Is a direct-vent design my best option?

Jeff W.

A: New gas fireplaces are very efficient, probably more so than your existing furnace, and they produce substantial heat. Most models should easily produce enough supplemental heat to keep even a large family room comfortable and warm. The heat outputs are only slightly different when set up for propane instead of natural gas.

TransAdelaide plan for fewer seats on our trains

TransAdelaide general manager Bill Watson has written to a disgruntled commuter who complained about a train carriage with reduced seating that has been on trial for six weeks.

His letter to Seacliff Park commuter Ivan Winter says: "Standing room, especially in peak periods, is the reality of all public transport systems in all major cities."

Mr Watson said replacing the decks of three seats along one side of Carriage 2103 with decks of two seats, did not cut the carriage's capacity because standing room had been increased.

"My immediate reaction to that is that it is outrageous," Mr Winter said yesterday.

"We ought to be developing and improving our public transport. Instead, what we're seeing from the operator is they are degrading it .

Cathedral's renovation could take 3 years, cost $15M

Sioux Falls Diocese Bishop Paul Swain wants to restore the beauty of St. Joseph Cathedral through a $15 million renovation project that could begin this year.

Swain laid out preliminary plans for the project before members and nuns Monday night in the cathedral's church hall.

The renovation would do more than put paint on the walls, he said. It would create an atmosphere that would bring more people to the church and help spread the word of God.

"We'll have some opportunities to invite others in," he said. "I'm not going to be satisfied if all we do is restore a beautiful place. ... I'm hopeful that we also enliven this place in a new way."

Swain said the project could take three years. He emphasized being respectful of what members have inherited and doing the project right.
